Sermon Discussion Questions
6.7.26
God With Us: The Promise
1. Where do you see evidence that God has been pursuing you, even during seasons when you were not actively pursuing Him?
Scripture: Genesis 12:1–4 (ESV)
Follow-Up Questions:
• When have you looked back and realized God was working before you recognized it?
• What circumstances or people has God used to draw you closer to Him?
• How does knowing that God pursues you change the way you view your relationship with Him?
Why This Connects:
The sermon emphasized that Abraham was not searching for God; God came looking for Abraham. The same is true for us. God's pursuit always comes before our response.
------------------------------------------------------------
2. What keeps you from fully trusting God when He asks you to step into the unknown?
Scripture: Hebrews 11:8 (ESV)
Follow-Up Questions:
• Is there an area of life where you feel God is asking you to trust Him more deeply right now?
• What security, comfort, or control is hardest for you to surrender?
• What would obedience look like if you took one step of faith this week?
Why This Connects:
Abraham left behind everything familiar because he trusted God's promise. The sermon challenged us to identify the counterfeit kingdoms we cling to and follow God's leading instead.
------------------------------------------------------------
3. When have you personally experienced God bringing restoration into an area that felt broken or hopeless?
Scripture: Genesis 17:7–8 (ESV)
Follow-Up Questions:
• What did that season teach you about God's character?
• Are there areas of your life where you still need God's restoring work?
• How can our group encourage one another toward hope instead of despair?
Why This Connects:
One of the major themes of the sermon was that God's response to humanity's rebellion was not abandonment but restoration. His desire has always been to bring people back into His presence.
------------------------------------------------------------
4. How has God proven His faithfulness to you during a season when you struggled to trust Him?
Scripture: Genesis 15:17–18 (ESV)
Follow-Up Questions:
• What promise of God do you find hardest to believe right now?
• How does God's faithfulness in the past help you face present uncertainty?
• Who in your life has modeled faith during difficult circumstances?
Why This Connects:
The covenant ceremony highlighted that God alone walked between the pieces, showing that He would remain faithful even when people fail. The sermon repeatedly pointed to God's unwavering faithfulness.
------------------------------------------------------------
5. What would it look like for you to actively trust God's promises in one specific area of your life this week?
Scripture: Genesis 15:6 (ESV)
Follow-Up Questions:
• What is one action you can take that demonstrates faith rather than fear?
• What obstacles might make obedience difficult?
• How can this group pray for and encourage you as you take that step?
Why This Connects:
The sermon concluded by emphasizing that our role is to respond in faith, just as Abraham did. God has accomplished redemption; our invitation is to trust Him and walk in obedience.
------------------------------------------------------------
Closing Prayer Prompt
Spend time thanking God for pursuing you when you were far from Him. Ask Him to strengthen your faith, help you trust His promises, reveal any counterfeit kingdoms competing for your allegiance, and give you courage to take one practical step of obedience this week as you follow Jesus.
