Wait For God
Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10
What are you waiting for right now?
Maybe it’s clarity about a decision. A health solution. A door to open. Maybe you are constantly under attack and you are waiting for a difficult season to end. It seems like we are always waiting for something and we don’t tend to handle it very well.
We live in a culture that doesn’t like waiting. If something takes too long, we try to find a faster way or worse yet we try to get out ahead of God. If we feel bored we reach for distractions. Waiting just feels wrong.
But the Bible tells a different story. It's filled with waiting. Abraham waited for a promised son. Joseph had to wait to get out of jail. The Israilites had to wander the desert for 40 years. David waited to become king. Generations waited for the Messiah. Even after Jesus’s resurrection, his followers had to wait for the Holy Spirit, and now we wait for his return.
When David was surrounded by his enemies he says in Psalm 27:13-14 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord. in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” That was his solution to a lot of problems and it’s good advice.
Waiting requires strength. We have to keep standing when we’d rather just or give up. God asks us to trust Him in faith when we would rather be in control. But God knows waiting is not wasted time. He’s trying to prepare us for what’s coming next. And fear not, w e are not alone. He’s right there with us.
One kind of waiting that is especially difficult is: Waiting for direction. What do we do now Lord? I like to quote Psalms because David was especially good at talking to God. He says in Psalms 25:4-5 Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.
Now clearly David doesn’t have it figured out but what I like best is his confidence. Now peace may not come from knowing the answer but it does come from knowing the one who leads.
Biblical waiting is more than just wishful thinking. It's all about developing our Faith and Hope. Romans 8:24-25 For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? 25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.” Now waiting patiently is not really very fun but we are not waiting because nothing is happening. We know that something is in the works even though we can’t see it. Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.
Is God commending us for our faith? How well do we wait?

- What emotions surface when you don’t have clarity?
- What would change if you saw waiting as part of your formation, not an interruption?
- How might God be forming you in this season?
